I have a questiion...
Jan. 31st, 2015 08:52 pmhas anyone ever seen a show called George Gently? I think it's BBC and it stars Martin Shaw from The Professionals. I just wondered if it's any good. There are seven seasons on Netflix and I was thinking about starting to watch them. I've never seen The Professionals, so I'm not familiar with this guy at all. The storyline sounded good. Anyone?
Hugs, Patt
Edited Sunday night: Well, I started watching Pros on You Tube and found out it has terrible sound and I'm so hard of hearing that there is no way I could listen to it withouot all the background noise being louder, too. I'm bummed, but thus is life. Being hard of hearing sucks sometimes. *sigh*

Date: 2015-02-01 08:49 am (UTC)GG is a really nice series. It's set in the 60s in the north of England and MS plays a London copper stranded there - can't remember why. He has a charming but gawmless and sometimes quite annoying sidekick played by the lovely Lee Ingleby. There is real chemistry between the two leads. The stories tend to seem quite slow moving - I'm trying to avoid using the word "gently"! - but it's more that they are slow-burners, and they usually rather dark in tone. Generally (there are always off ones in any series)it's a good, solid piece of entertainment with good performances and a feel for the period and lots of topical stuff of the time included. And way more realistic than JJD, where the character is just BONKERS! :))

Date: 2015-02-01 09:12 am (UTC)Bodie and Doyle are the prerequisite chalk and cheese pairing - so loads of fireworks and great banter. Bodie is a former mercenary and ex-SAS, Doyle is an ex-Met copper. Both have loads of girlfriends (pretty much babes of the week) and loads of shadowy people from their pasts who turn up to create havoc, as well as evil but believable criminals. There's H/C, angst, and jeopardy galore, along with loads of jokes and car chases and gun-fights. It's fab stuff!
Off the top of my head, and not sticking to a timeline here, I would say start with:
Blind Run
Hunter/Hunted
The Purging of CI5
The Ojuka Situation
Man Without a Past
Backtrack
Discovered in a Graveyard
But they are all (with a couple of weird exceptions) hugely enjoyable!

BTW the way to find the episodes is to keep scrolling down the sidebar to find one that's around 50 minutes in length - so a full episode. Once you have scrolled down and not found one you are looking for, click on any of the episodes shown, and the new side bar will tend to have additional videos on it. Eventually you will find the eps I've suggested! It took me quite a lot of scrolling and clicking to find Blind Run! Let me know if you need any other pointers!

Date: 2015-02-01 01:43 pm (UTC)George Gently is fab - it's slow-ish, but incredibly authentic to the 1950's 1960's in the UK. If you enjoy Lewis, you'll enjoy GG.
And I second the pimping of you into Pros! You want to watch Martin Shaw's bottom in Blind Run, and forget dodgy scripts, plot holes and any clue as to what's going on! Would I lie to you?

Date: 2015-02-01 03:28 pm (UTC)I've watched all five of the series and it gets better as you go along. It's very British, slow, but thorough in character development. Martin Shaw is fab. I think if you like shows like Inspector Morse, Endeavour, or Lewis, you'll probably like George Gently. If you like things that go at a faster pace, probably not.
I liked The Professionals, too, but for very different reasons. It's very slashy. Bodie and Doyle are partners in an elite squad called CI5. They stop terrorist plots or gangsters, but they're more like cops than spies. I don't like spy shows, either. They're very good, but on a totally superficial level, they're incredibly slashy and handsome in a very British way. There's a lot of action and they're sort of like Starksy and Hutch the English way. There's a TON of fanfic, too. I read that before I watched, so I was already inclined toward seeing them in slashy terms.

Date: 2015-02-02 09:49 pm (UTC)As has already been mentioned, it is not a fast-paced show but the plots and acting are first rate and I highly recommend the series.
I was a Pros fan way back and still enjoy watching an episode now and again so I hope you have the opportunity to find copies of the series to watch elsewhere rather than via You Tube.
