pattrose: (2. mom and dad)
[personal profile] pattrose
I'm staying until August 25th and will get home after being away for five weeks. God, it seems like forever. Mom has her good days and her bad days, so I want to spend as much time with her as I can. She's so happy that I'm here. She was very lonely and I think I'm helping. (I hope, anyway.) She's going to have to be alone eventually, but she has a place attached to my brother Dan's house, so she's never alone at night or early in the morning. I think she'll do just fine. :) I haven't read live journal in ages. I must go and catch up. I hope you all are well. :)

Hugs, Patt

It's difficult when you'd like to be in two places at once. At least you know that she's got your brother near her (or she's near him :-) )

I'm sure it's a difficult time for everyone. I'm so glad you're able to be with her and help her through this transition period.

Are there any adult or elderly services in your area, a place where maybe she can go and be with people for parts of the day or a few times a week? It might help her to be with others for activities. She wouldn't feel so alone or cut off and she might make some new friends.

I'm glad your mom is so close to your brother. It must ease your mind that he's so close at hand.

::hugs:: I hope things are going well. Take care. ♥

My brother, Dan is an angel. He takes such good care of her. :) So, I really don'tworry about her being too lonely, but I do worry about the depression she seems to be in.

Grey, she has dementia, so it makes her unsure of herself with strangers. She won't do anything without one of us with her. And she's getting worse, I think. Then there is the depression she seems to be fighting every day. (sigh)

My brother worries that she's not going to be with us long, so that's why I'm staying longer. It happens all the time that couples that are married for 65+ years die not long after the first one has left. I hate to even think about it. For now, she has a ton of family around her all the time. So that's good.

I suspect that's inevitable, and only time will resolve it. The first year after losing someone is always hardest, and your parents were married... what, sixty years? Sixty five? Adjusting to life without your dad after so long has to be very difficult for her. All you (and Dan) can do is be as supportive and encouraging as possible.

It's incredibly hard when couples have been together so long. I hope so much that having you all around helps her, and you getting quality time together too is so important; you can lay down good memories, and make time for hugs and laughter... Hang in there babe - you're being fabulous. *hugs*

Company is so important when you lose someone at that age, its good that brother leaves so close and I bet its especially nice for her (and you) to be able to spend some time together too.
