2025 Question a day

4.    Dry January is a campaign where people choose to abstain from alcohol for the entire month of January (the campaign was started in 2013 by Alcohol Change UK, a UK charity). Are you joining in with dry January?

I’m an alcoholic myself so I’m not sure what I’m supposed to put. All I know is AA frowns on .drinking. 😂 I think it’s a great idea to do now and then. But I’ve been non drinking f’or the last 30 years. Does anyone know a person or persons that actually did this? I just wondered why someone would do this.

I just read this and I don’t want anyone thinking it’s an easy life. But I tend to joke about things when I’m not sure what to say. Can you believe it’s the 4th of January already?enjoy the rest of January.

I think the idea is to start the year with good habits and some people (as I'm sure you know) just don't realise how much they drink, so sometimes it's a wake-up call.

I think, especially after all the Holidays at the end of the year when many people use to drink more than usual, a non-alcohol period is not the worst idea. Just as a reminder of how easily you can overstep your lines.

I've been sober since 1985, so no booze for me any time. But I think a dry January is a good idea. As someone else said, I don't think some people realize how much they drink or how much they need it until they go without for an extended period.

I know I've seen interviews with Tom Holland and he mentioned that he started his sobriety with just such a thing, a dry month. Then he realized that he should stop in order to be happier.

And congrats for your own sobriety. I know it's not easy.

Oh wow, now I feel bad about going on about my alcohol advent calendars. Sorry if that was hard for you to read. On the other hand, if you're anything like me when it comes to cigarettes, I'm guessing it might not bug you to read about?

I've never really considered doing dry January, but honestly, I don't drink enough to make a difference anyway. I figure the people who do it are people who are starting to get scared that they might be an alcoholic and want to test their reactions to going cold turkey for a whole month. Maybe just to prove something to themselves. Also, one of the grad students I worked with in college used to periodically stop drinking for a month because she said it lowered her tolerance level.

I don't personally do any kind of abstinence programme in January, but I can appreciate how for some people it can be a helpful way to pause and reassess habits.

I tend to joke about things when I’m not sure what to say.

Ooft, I feel this.

I don't do dry January because I don't really drink. I have a beer at book club once a month, that takes place in a bar and that's it. I do know people who have done dry January and they have all fit into 3 camps; 1) like other people have mentioned, taking a break after the possible excess of the holidays and are possibly concerned about how much they drink, 2) People who have been told they drink too much and want to prove they can stop whenever they want to, or 3) people who use it as part of their extreme health regimes to start off the year, usually also paired with many supplements, extreme diets, and multiple hours of exercise a day. And juice cleanses. Cannot forget the juice cleanses.
