Blair was so excited about the parade and the fact that he had been asked to carry the flag. Of all of the gay people in Cascade, he had been asked to carry it. He felt so much pride and the only thing stopping him from feeling perfect was the fact that he had to tell Jim. He didn’t know how Jim would feel about his partner being in a Gay Pride Parade.

Jim didn’t know that Blair was gay, or at least not that Blair knew of. When Jim walked in the door that night, Blair was bouncing in place and said, “Guess who they asked to carry the flag in tomorrow’s parade?”

“Well, I guess it would be you because I can’t see you getting that excited about anyone else getting to carry it. I’m happy for you, Chief. When are you leaving in the morning?”

“I’ve got to be at the starting point by 8:00 a.m. and I’ve got my alarm set in case I don’t wake up by myself. I’m so excited about it. I still can’t believe they asked me. Are you sure this doesn’t bother you?”

“Why would it bother me? I’m proud of you, so carry it with pride.” Jim walked up the stairs and started to get ready for bed.

Blair thought Jim was acting a little odd but he didn’t want to make a big deal over it since he had to get to bed himself. Blair bounced all the way into the bathroom and then his bedroom.

At 8:00, Blair was ready and waiting at the start-up site and they handed him his flag. Blair thought it was probably one of the prettiest flags he had ever seen and he gladly carried it with pride. As he marched, listening to the music and everyone talking around him, he suddenly noticed a batch of police officers dressed in their blues marching right behind him. He glanced over his shoulder again and saw it was Rafe, Brown, Conner, Simon, Joel and Jim. Blair had tears in his eyes as he walked down the street. He was so proud of all of his friends, especially Jim.

After the day ended, Jim found Blair still carrying the flag and said, “Need any help putting the flag away?”

“No, I’m folding it now. Thank you for coming today, it meant the world to me.”

“It wasn’t for you, Chief. I’m bi and I’ve been going to the marches for many years. I talked everyone from the Bullpen into going this year for you. But I go every year; I just didn’t know how you would feel about it. I guess we both worried about nothing.”

Blair handed the flag back to Mr. Simpson and said, “Thank you for asking me, sir. It was a privilege I will always be grateful for.”

“Good day, young man.” He walked away a happy man.

“Say Jim, how would you like to go out for coffee?”

“Would that constitute as our first date?” Jim asked hopefully.

“Our first of many, I hope.”

“You wish is my command, young man.” Jim teased as they walked to their vehicles.

As Blair drove to the coffee shop he wondered if all parades brought out the best in people, because this one sure did. And now he would be marching with Jim for the rest of his life.

The end.
