pattrose: (2. lily)

The woman that sold us Lily, our labradoodle a year ago, called and asked us if we would consider taking in an eight month old labradoodle. She's brown, where our Lily is chalk colored. Her name is Abby and she weighs 16 pounds and she is more or less full grown. So she is much smaller than our Lily, who weighs 34. She's high strung, like our Lily is, but we were thinking that might work out. They could wear each other out every day and that might help in the long run. So as of April 1st, we're going to have our new addition, Abby join the family. Anyhow, Linda had saved Abby to breed, but she's just too nervous for that. Our Lily is a nervous nelly also but it doesn't bother any of us. She's a good dog and super good with Samantha, who dresses her up every single night. LOL See the icon. It looks like we're going to have two dogs in the family and we've never done that before. I see people post about their animals and they have more than one and they seem to do just fine. So, please keep us in your thoughts on April 1st when we try and make this transition as easy for as possible for Abby. We choose the name Abby, her real name is Laverne and I wouldn't do that to the pup. LOL I think Abby is cute. I've always liked that name. OKay, I'm done with my newsflash. LOL Have a good week, y'all.

Hugs, Patt

Be careful introducing them, though. Take them for a walk together before you take Abby into the house, so that they've at least become marginally acquainted first - indeed, if at all possible, take them out together several times before Abby joins your household; and make it clear to them that Lily - the already resident one - comes above Abby in the domestic pecking order, even if it's just by putting Lily's food bowl down first. That helps keep Lily from feeling she's being displaced by the newcomer, prevents possible jealousy (since Lily has been the only pet).

And yes, having two of them means they'll probably end up getting quite a lot of exercise playing together.

Yes, we're going to introduce them slowly. That's why we're waiting until April 1st. :) All good advice.

Oh, I hope it goes well. I know my Daisy loves her Suki.

If all goes well, they'll keep one another company. So, has Abby been spayed yet? That would help her be less nervous and make things a lot easier in the long run.

Linda is doing that this weekend. She wants to have it all done before we take her home. THen we'll go three times at least to see how the pups do together. She's so cute.

I'm glad she's doing it before you get her. You'll be amazed at how much better and calmer she'll be after that.

Good luck.

Wishing you good luck also. And yes, Abby is a much better name than Laverne. (with apologies to all Lavernes out there. *g*)

Puppy!

She sounds like a real sweetie - good luck with the introductions, and thank goodness you've picked a nice new name for her - Laverne is a nice name, but it'd be a pain to be yelling that out the back door for her *g*

Oh that's such a good idea!! You're going to like it very much, I swear!! I really hope things work find between those two. We ended up doing the same thing for our cats, and that true, it gives to the first a true companion and you can be sure they're going to wear oout each other for sure!! That's exacting news; I can't wait for the pictures :-)))

I know, that's what I thought about the name change too. LOL Thank you for the luck wishing, I"m sure we're going to need it a lot to start with. It's going to be quite a change for all of us.

Yes, I"m going to take tons of pictures of the two of them. They're going to look so different. Abby is cocoa brown and Lily is chalk colored, almost white. They will probably offset each other beautifully. LOL I hope we do like having two dogs, we never have, so this is all new to us.

Grey, are you pups nervous around people when they come to the house? Just wondering if anyone elses dogs did this. Lily warms up pretty quickly, but at first she is a nervous Nelly.

Best of luck!

I read stuff like this and I think...Declan would like a friend. ...And then I remember the long exercise in patience his puppyhood was and I remind myself I can't do it again. Though, if someone asked me to, I would have a heck of a time saying no.

Ooops, slight ramble there. Did I mention, good luck??!!

Thank you very much for all of the luck you wished our way. We're hoping this works out well. Rodney and I are sort of old to be starting out with an eight month old again, but I think Lily will take over a lot of the care of Abby. Gosh, I hope so. LOL

Oh, yes, they go crazy when someone first comes in, barking and acting nutty. They do settle down when they know the person, takes a few minutes, but that first knock sets off pack sounds. It's especially bad with Suki because she's like a wild thing and has a very loud, high pitched bark.

I do like having her bark at noises and anyone near the house, though. I like a warning when anyone is around. She's a good little alarm system. LOL Glad to hear mine is not the only one who doesn't dig people all the time.
