Waiting by the Phone

Blair was moody all day in the bull pen. Conner grabbed Jim by the arm and took him into interrogation room 1 and asked, “What’s up with Sandy? He usually loves Christmas time.”

“Not that it’s any of your business, but he can’t seem to find his mom anywhere and is worried that they won’t even get to talk for Christmas or Christmas Eve. He’s used to having her close on holidays. I hope she calls, he deserves better then that.”

“Jim, you’re absolutely right. I’ll keep my fingers crossed that she calls tonight and he’ll be back to his own happy self in no time.”

“Thanks, Conner. I’m sure it’ll work out,” Jim said as he walked out of the room and almost ran into Blair in the hallway.

“Are you leaving all of the paperwork for me?” Blair asked, sounding very annoyed.

Jim sighed and said, “No, I was heading in that direction right now. I’ll finish the rest.”

“Good, because I’m not your secretary,” Blair grumbled.

Jim rolled his eyes and got to work on the files.

That night, they were sitting on the sofa watching It’s a Wonderful Life when the phone rang. Blair almost fell jumping up to answer it.

Please be Naomi. Jim thought.

It was Simon wondering what time he was supposed to be over the next day for dinner that Jim and Blair invited him to.

Blair sat back down and sighed.

“I’m sorry your mom hasn’t called yet, Chief.”

“Me too, but I should be used to it,” Blair answered.

“Doesn’t make it any easier,” Jim reminded him.

The entire evening, he waited for the call that never came.

At 12:05 Christmas day, Jim stood up and said, “Merry Christmas, Chief.”

“Merry Christmas to you, Jim. I think I’ll get ready and go to bed,” Blair replied.

“Chief, take the phone into your bedroom in case she calls between now and later today,” Jim suggested.

“No, she’s not going to call,” Blair remarked.

“I’m sorry,” Jim said.

“Yeah, well, we don’t always get what we want do we?” Blair answered.

“Goodnight, Chief. See you in about six hours. We have a lot to do,” Jim reminded him.

“I know, I’m looking forward to keeping busy. Thanks for letting me invite everyone over,” Blair said, “goodnight, Jim.”

Jim walked up the stairs and felt horrible, but there was nothing he could do about it. There was no way to fix this problem no matter how much he wanted to.

Jim heard Blair come out of his bedroom and take the phone into his room, which made Jim smile.

Blair fell asleep waiting for a call that never came.
