Dancing with a Cop
By Patt

Blair came barreling into the loft, slamming the door and yelled, “Hey Jim are you home?” As if I didn’t see his truck outside.

Jim came walking out of the bathroom wearing rubber gloves and said, “Guess.”

Blair burst out laughing seeing his roommate with the rubber gloves on. It never failed to make Blair laugh when Jim wore them.

“Do you know how to dance?” Blair asked bouncing in place.

“Fast dance? I’m not up to date on anything fast,” Jim admitted.

“No, slow dancing. I’ve got a date with Melanie Reeder and she wants to go dancing the first date. Guess who never learned to dance? Blair asked pitifully.

Jim smiled and said, “It’s really easy Chief. I like slow dances, so I don’t mind teaching you if you don’t mind a male partner.”

“Oh man, that would be great. The date isn’t for two weeks. It’s at the Policeman’s Banquet. You know who Melanie is right?” Blair wondered.

“She’s the Commissioner’s daughter. Yeah, I keep up to date on hot shot names. How did you land that date?” Jim inquired sounding just a least bit jealous.

“She’s really nice and said yes, the first time I asked her. But she said it was for the banquet and that’s two weeks away. She said she loves to slow dance and couldn’t wait to slow dance with me. Can you believe it?” Blair asked happily.

“Yeah, Chief, I can believe it. You’re a great guy and she must see that. I’m going to teach you until you’re really good at it,” Jim answered.

“Do we even have any slow dance music?” Blair asked heading over to look at their stash of cds.

“I have some Tony Bennett music over there and they play his music at the banquet every year, so you’re safe,” Jim replied.

“Is it the Tony Bennett old stuff or Tony Bennett new stuff?” Blair asked.

“They are all his old stuff. Carolyn loved Tony Bennett, but she left the cds when she moved out. I haven’t listened to them since,” Jim realized.

“They might bring back some hurtful memories, so maybe I should buy a cd and we’ll practice with that,” Blair suggested.

“Don’t be silly. I’m over Carolyn, we’ve been divorced for years. When do you want to start?” Jim asked brushing off Blair’s worry wart personality.

“Tonight? Would that work for you?” Blair questioned hopefully.

Jim walked over to the kitchen, pulled off his gloves and said, “We’ll start right after dinner. I’ve got dinner almost ready, so go and wash up.”

“Yes, sir,” Blair joked and walked into the bathroom to get cleaned up.

Dinner was uneventful. They talked about different things. Jim wanted to ask Blair out on a date, but now that he knew of Blair's date with Melanie he couldn't. His timing was always a little bit off.

~~~~~
“So how do we do this?” Blair asked as Jim made room in the dining room to dance. He moved the kitchen table all the way over to the wall so they would have plenty of dancing room.
“Chief, don’t worry so much. It’s going to be fun, you just wait and see,” Jim said as he slipped a Tony Bennett cd into the player.
Blair was following Jim around the room and finally asked, “So do you think Melanie is a good date for me?”
“Why wouldn’t she be?” Jim wondered.
“Well, you didn’t look that enthused before when I told you,” Blair said.
“Blair, it’s not my date, it’s yours. I don’t get enthused about other people’s dates. So stop worrying,” Jim explained.
“Jim, you haven’t been out in a long time, is something wrong with your senses?” Blair asked, always being the good Guide.
Jim sighed and then smiled as he said, “Blair, there is nothing wrong with anything. I just haven’t felt like dating lately.”
“Oh my god, there is something wrong. What is it? Talk to me Jim,” Blair pleaded.
“I’ve had someone in mind, but he doesn’t know I’m alive, so let’s just drop it,” Jim confessed.
“He? Are you fucking with me? He? Since when have you dated guys, Jim?”
“Since I was in high school, Blair.”
“I’ve never seen you with a guy before,” Blair pointed out.
“I haven’t dated a guy in like five years, so that’s why you haven’t noticed. But it’s not a big deal. Now do you want to learn to dance or not?” Jim stood with his hands out in the places they would be for dancing.
Blair walked over and said, “I like this song, it’s relaxing.”
“Now we’re going to start out with just basic slow dancing. Nothing fancy or anything else. You hold her nice and close like this,” Jim said as he pulled Blair into his body.
“It’s no wonder people like to slow dance then, right?” Blair joked.
“Carolyn used to love it. It was one of the few things that we did where she enjoyed herself with me. Come on follow my lead, but remember when you’ll be dancing with Melanie you’ll be leading,” Jim said as he pulled Blair even closer and started to sway with the music.
“Oh my god, this is so sexy. I’ve missed out on this all this time. Thank you for showing me how to do it, Jim.”
“Blair, this is just the beginning. We have a long way to go. Now relax and just follow my lead.”
The music was filling the air with gentle sounds, making both men relax. Tony Bennett was indeed a good cd to listen to.
“As you get into the dance, then you lower your head into her neck and stay nice and cozy that way. It’s a very sensual dance.” Jim did this and showed Blair what he was talking about.
They danced this same way for about four songs and then Blair said, “I need to take a break or I’m going to start humping your leg.”
Jim burst out laughing and said, “Let’s have some beer and popcorn, how does that sound?”
“Sounds great. Man, this slow dancing is sexy as hell. I didn’t mean to get hard on you, I couldn’t help it, Jim.”
Jim grabbed two beers and put the popcorn in the microwave. “It’s all right, Blair. Everyone gets turned on while dancing. Stop worrying about it.”
“You were turned on?” Blair inquired.
“Yes, I’m not different than any other normal human being,” Jim kidded.
“While we take this break, let’s talk about this man you want to ask out. What is the problem?” Blair asked.
“He’s a babe magnet and doesn’t see me as anything but a cop,” Jim said quickly.
“Is it Rafe?” Blair asked.
“No, it’s not Rafe. I’m not going to tell you who it is anyway. So stop guessing. I’ll get the popcorn and we can snack and get back to the dancing,” Jim said as he got up to get a bowl for the popcorn.
They ate the popcorn and drank their beer talking about anything but who Jim wanted to ask out. Jim was happy. He figured that Blair was going to let it drop. He must have forgotten who his Guide was and what he usually did.
“You ready for lesson 2?” Jim asked wearing a big smile. Secretly Jim was enjoying this a great deal. He had always wanted to dance with Blair.
“Yes, I’m ready. What are you going to show me now?” Blair questioned.
“We’re going to put something peppier on and do swing dancing. It’s fun and you’ll be able to show Melanie exactly how talented you really are.” Jim changed the cd and then grabbed Blair and said, “Are you ready?”
“As ready as I’ll ever be,” Blair replied smiling.
Jim went slowly at first to show him the steps of swing dancing and then he stepped up the pace and they were dancing to the beat of the music. Blair was having a ball. He couldn’t believe how much fun dancing was. To think he had missed all this was unreal. Tribal dances were always done individually, you were your own master of the dance. Blair was used to that and now he found out how fun it was to dance with someone else. Blair especially liked being flung away from Jim and then drawn back again. It was not only fun but very sexy. He knew that if they practiced every night, Blair would be good enough to show Melanie a great time.
The music stopped and Jim said, “That’s all this old man has in him for tonight. We’ll practice every night until you feel comfortable enough to go it on your own.”
“Jim, you’re the best. Thank you so much.”
“I’m going to get ready for bed,” Jim said as he pushed the table back where it belonged and shut the cd player off for the night.
“Hey Jim, I had a lot of fun tonight.”
“Good, Blair. It’s supposed to be fun.”
Blair walked into his bedroom and wondered if Jim was always this much fun. Blair had no idea that Jim could dance like that and make an evening go by so quickly as he did. Blair was happier than he’d been in ages and wondered if it was the dancing or if it was Jim. This confused the young man somewhat and he knew he was going to have to put some thought into it.
Once Jim was upstairs he was sad. He knew that he could never have Blair like this and it killed him to let go of the hope. But there was nothing left to hold on to. Melanie was gorgeous and she was a good catch. Blair might have found the one. He felt sorry for himself a little while longer until he fell asleep.
Night 2
Blair had been busy at the University all day long, so he hadn’t even had a chance to stop at the bullpen and help Jim out with anything. He found himself looking forward to getting home and learning more of the dance.
Jim was making dinner when Blair walked into the loft. “Hey man, I thought it was my night to cook.”
“I got home earlier than you and thought I would start dinner, so that leaves more time for dance lessons. Am I right?” Jim asked.
“Sounds good to me. What are we having for dinner?” Blair inquired.
“Salisbury steak, mashed potatoes, gravy and asparagus. How does that sound, Chief?”
“It sounds great. I’m starving,” Blair said heading to the bathroom to wash up.
Jim sat the table really quickly and got everything set on the table by the time Blair came out of the bathroom.
“Looks great, Jim.”
“Dig in, there’s plenty. I made extra so we can have leftovers tomorrow night,” Jim pointed out.
The two men sat and ate in silence. Jim knew that Blair loved it because he was shoveling it down as fast as he put it on his plate. Jim was doing much of the same.
They finally finished and Blair said, “That was a most excellent meal, Jim.”
“Thank you, Blair.”
“Let’s get the dishes done, food put away and the table moved and we can start our lessons again,” Blair suggested.
“Sounds good to me,” Jim answered.
They got everything done, moved the table and put the music on and Jim pulled Blair into his arms and they began to dance the slow dance first. Jim noticed that Blair seemed closer to him that night. He wasn’t keeping any distance. He was getting the hang of it, quite well.
They danced for about an hour and then Blair asked, “Could we do the swing dance now?”
Jim changed the music and took Blair into his arms and began the dance. Jim noticed that Blair seemed to really like this dance, even though it was a little harder, he was getting all of the steps and moves and was doing it quite well. A couple of times Blair laughed outright and Jim could tell he was having a great time. Jim was having a great time too, but for all of the wrong reasons.
They had started dancing at 7:00 and it was now 10:00. Where had the time gone? Jim couldn’t believe how fast the evening went. He also knew that this would be the last time dancing with Blair. He was good enough to go it alone from here on.
“That’s good for tonight, Blair.”
“Thank you so much, Jim. Can we practice more, tomorrow night?”
Jim smiled and said, “Sure.” He walked with a lighter step and a smile on his face all the way to the bathroom to get ready for bed. He knew he had no chance with Blair, but for these nights at least he could pretend.
Blair slid into his bed that night and knew he was going to be dreaming of how great Jim danced. For being such a big muscular guy, Jim was very light on his feet. Blair loved dancing with him and longed for it to be more. But Jim had his eye on someone else.
Blair fell to sleep, with dreams of a dancing Jim. He was smiling in his sleep.
Upstairs, Jim was doing the same thing. He was going to sleep with a smile on his face too. He loved dancing with Blair and it was going so well. He was able to touch and hold Blair all he wanted to. He hoped Blair wanted to dance for a long, long while.
Night 3
When Jim got home from the station, Blair already had the leftovers heated up and the table set.
“Hey Chief, how are you doing?”
“I’m doing great, thank you. Come on, wash up for dinner, it’s all ready,” Blair bossed.
Jim did as he was told and came out and was thrilled with the smell of good food once again.
“You didn’t make it into the station again today, is something going on at the university? Jim asked as he sat down at the table.
“I had two students come to me for special make-up classes, so I had to do that. I didn’t even have enough time to call you. I’m sorry,” Blair answered.
“It’s not a big deal. It was really a quiet day at the station. I caught up on all of my paperwork for a change. So you won’t have to do it all, like you usually do,” Jim kidded.
“I’m going to try and get in tomorrow, but if I don’t, I’ll make sure and call you, Jim.”
“Sounds good to me, now let’s eat,” Jim said as he started in.
Blair told Jim about the two students and what promise both of them had while he ate dinner. Jim loved hearing about Blair’s life at the university. Who was Jim kidding? He loved hearing Blair talk, period.
They cleaned up after dinner, got the table moved and got ready for the lessons again. Jim found himself wondering why Blair felt the need for more lessons.
“Chief, do you think you aren’t doing well in your lessons?” Jim asked.
“I think I’m doing all right, but I want this to be like second nature to me. If you don’t mind spending the time with me, that is,” Blair said.
“Let me get the music started, we’ll start with slow dancing again and work our way up to swing dancing,” Jim said as he put the cd on and then went and took Blair into his arms. It was like it was the natural thing to do. Blair slid right into Jim’s arms and it was like they were made for each other.
They danced for about two hours and then Jim said, “Let’s sit on the sofa and just talk.”
Blair helped Jim move the table back to where it belonged and they sat down on the sofa.
“Blair, I have something to tell you,” Jim started.
“What? Is something wrong? Is it your senses?” Blair asked nervously.
“There is nothing wrong that telling the truth won’t help. I have to tell you the truth about something,” Jim said.
“So tell,” Blair replied.
“You’re the man that I wanted to ask out and I can’t keep doing the dancing because it’s messing with my mind. I feel like we’re a couple and I know we’re not. So this has to be our last dance lesson. I don’t want you to feel bad about it, all right? I’m fine, I’ll be just fine,” Jim assured Blair.
Blair pulled the stupid man into his arms and kissed him. Jim returned the kiss with everything he had.
When they finally pulled apart for breathing, Blair said, “So as you can see, there isn’t a problem at all.”
“What about Melanie?” Jim asked foolishly.
“Who cares? She just wanted to date me to irritate her daddy. Believe me, it’s not that big of a deal,” Blair said happily.
“How would you like to go out dancing the night of the banquet? We can’t dance there, so I’d like to take you dancing somewhere else,” Jim asked.
“Sounds good to me. Some day we’re going to be able to tell people though, right?” Blair inquired.
“We can tell our friends right now, but Simon wouldn’t like it if we outed ourselves at the Policeman’s Banquet. We can tell all of our friends on Poker night if you’d like. We can show them our new office,” Jim said smiling.
“Our new office?” Blair asked, eyes shining brightly.
“Yeah, your old bedroom with a new desk and a few other things and we’ll show them that and let them guess where you’re sleeping.”
“I think that’s a good idea. Tomorrow we’ll go shopping for some things for the office,” Blair said laughing.
“I think you should call Melanie right now and tell her that something came up and you won’t be able to take her. Okay, Blair?”
Blair didn’t answer, got up and picked up the phone and dialed her number. “Melanie, this is Blair Sandburg. I wanted to let you know that I’m not going to be able to take you to the banquet and wanted you to have plenty of time to find someone else. Something came up that was of great importance.”
Jim heard her whine a little bit on the phone but eventually she gave in and said goodbye.
When Blair sat back down he noticed that Jim was frowning. “What’s wrong?”
“You knew her number by heart. You said she wasn’t important, but yet you knew her number. Are you sure you’re doing the right thing?” Jim asked being his insecure self.
“I have a good memory, Jim. You know that as well as I do. Now come over here and kiss me again,” Blair said as he pulled Jim back into his arms.
Jim didn’t fight him this time and kissed him like they had been dancing - passionately and exhaustive. Blair tasted like home. Jim knew that they were right for each other and couldn’t wait to tell everyone.
“You know what I find most exciting about this entire thing?” Blair questioned.
“That you get to have sex with me?” Jim asked.
“Okay, let me reword this. Do you know what I find almost as exciting as having sex with you?” Blair teased.
“What?”
“I found out how exciting it was to be dancing with a cop. Cops don’t remind you of great dancers. But you are and you were great fun,” Blair admitted.
“I’m glad that this all worked out because I had given up two nights ago,” Jim said.
“Don’t ever give up on me, Jim.”
“I won’t, now. I’ll always be here for you. But one night a week, we’re going to be dancing,” Jim stated.
“Sounds good to me. Now let’s discuss our life,” Blair suggested.
“Discuss away,” Jim answered wearing a huge smile.
